Zoe
âWhat was that?â I demand for the umteenth time. âWhy did she say her name is Zoe?â
My imagination is good enough that I can hazard a guess, but I want to hear Gray say it. Actually, I want him to say anything. Recite the fucking microwave instructions from the pizza he had earlier. Iâm not picky as long as he speaks up.
âTell me,â I say, my tone growing steely when he just continues to stare at me with a vacant look in his eyes. âYou owe me the truth, Gray. Look me in the eye and tell me.â
Unease prickles at my spine as I feel the Kings and Cunts behind me move around. Even though I trust them, I donât like that I canât see what theyâre doing. But the discomfort isnât enough to make me look away from Gray.
âZoe, maybe we shouldââ
âLeave,â I snarl as I interrupt Slasher. âLeave us alone.â
Iâm not expecting them to do as I say, so Iâm surprised when feet scuff along the floor. Instead of looking, I listen intently, not relaxing until the only sound is coming from my heavy breathing.
Just as I realize I havenât heard the door close, Alana calls out, âWeâll be right outside, Z.â Then she closes the door behind her.
Gray stands completely still. His eyes are wild, and he keeps clenching and unclenching his hands. He opens and closes his mouth a few times, looking like heâs attempting to find the words to answer me.
Back before I was at Gunnerâs mercy, I would have easily gone toe-to-toe with Gray. I would have jumped him or slapped him to pull him out of whatever mental block heâs experiencing. But now⦠I lick my lips as I consider my options.
What should this version of me do?
I huff in irritation at not having the answer to something as simple as what I want to do. Then it hits me, and I quickly wrap my pinky around his. I pull at where our fingers are intertwined.
A visible shudder runs through his body as, slowly, his gaze turns sharp, focused, and he looks directly at me. âHer real name is⦠was Erin,â he rasps.
âOkay,â I say, softly.
âFuck!â he roars, ripping his finger from mine.
I watch as he agitatedly paces the length of the room while running his fingers through his wavy hair. He keeps muttering to himself, and the only bits I pick up sound like nothing more than curses.
âFuck!â While shouting out his frustration and anger, he kicks at everything that gets in his way.
Feeling at a loss on how to help him, I look down at my hands. Thatâs when I see it. The blood. I donât know if itâs his or mine, and it doesnât really matter.
âGray,â I call, surprised at how steady my tone is. âGet over here.â
His head snaps in my direction, and when I show him my bloodied hand, he exhales audibly and rushes to my side.
âDoes it hurt? Fuck, I completely forgot toââ
I roll my eyes. âShut up for a second.
